SHAR PEI

Height 46-51cm

Weight 18-30kg

** 2/5

The Shar Pei is a medium height fairly well built and muscular dog with a short fine coat and extremely saggy skin especially in the head area, and they have extremely small folded ears. The colours of the coat can vary from such colours as red, red fawn, five-point red, black, black silver sables, black bronze sables, sables, cream, blue, cream dilute, apricot dilute, chocolate, chocolate dilute, lilac and isabelline but the coat tends to be a singular colour and not with patches. The Shar Pei originates from China and was bred for dog fighting competitions and as a show dog for the richer families. The Shar Pei usually has a medium energy but can sometimes if not trained become very stubborn, so they must be trained and disciplined from a young age. However Shar Peis tend to have allot of health problems such as heart, eye, ear, skin etc. and as many as 1 in 5 develop the deadly Shar Pei fever which is shown as a swelling of the ankles and can half the dogs life span. Aside from his the dog can make a great guard dog and house pet, but I would recommend that anyone who intends on owning a Shar Pei take into account that they are extremely prone to illness.
